Every Entry, A to Z
Mike Kobeissi works in La Cañada Flintridge, and every entry in this encyclopedia starts from that town, its houses or the hills and institutions around it; this index lists them all alphabetically, followed by the subject indexes. The subjects reach well past real estate. On Mount Wilson, Astronomy magazine’s timeline of Mount Wilson Observatory begins with George Ellery Hale’s first year on the mountain in 1904 and records that the observatory’s 60 inch telescope, once finished, was the largest in the world for nine years.1 The car age left its own landmarks: the National Park Service describes the Arroyo Seco Parkway, a 6.2 mile road completed in 1940, as the first freeway in the West and the first stretch of Route 66 built as a modern limited access highway.2
Entries are sorted by their main word, so a title that opens with The or A is filed under the word that follows. Letters with no entries are left out of the row of letters above the list.
